Friday 21 November: Schoolboys jailed for life, Manchester gets ready to vote and Piccadilly tram stops reopen

Published on November 21st 2008.

TWO SCHOOLBOYS have been given life sentences after kicking and punching a man to death in Bolton. Andrew Smith, 16, of Deane, Bolton, and his friend Jason Bolton, 18, also from Deane, attacked Asaf Mahmood Ahmed outside a nightclub in December last year. Ahmed suffered severe head injuries and was clutching an asthma inhaler. The judge said Bolton returned after the initial attack and kicked the inhaler out of his hand. Mr Justice MacDuff sentenced Smith to a minimum 13 years' detention and gave Bolton a minimum 17 year jail term.

BALLOT PAPERS will go out to the people of Manchester next week to vote for or against the congestion charge. The proposed zone will be 80 square miles- the largest in the world- and will come into effect in 2013 if the majority of residents in seven out of Manchester's 10 council areas vote for it.

PICCADILLY GARDENS and Piccadilly railway station tram stops have been reopened today. Engineers have been working on the lines between the two stops since September. Philip Purdy, GMPTE's Metrolink director, said: "I'm sure passengers will find their tram journeys are smoother, quieter and more reliable.”

FOLLOWING his captaincy at the match against Hull and bus journey to the Trafford Centre this week, City Manager Mark Hughes has spoken about about his star player, Robinho. He said: “I felt that during the Spurs game, under difficult circumstances he led from the front, so that was the thinking behind giving him the armband. He played well again against Hull. Good luck to him and he’s getting to know the town and what better way get to know it than to jump on a local bus.”

They should bring back the death sentence for scum like that...it makes me sick that MY taxes are paying to feed and clothe them in prison.

emma grace says..“ Sorry if this sounds daft, but Victor, they haven't actually banned ipods have they?!?!”No - But Gordon and Jacquie Smith are going to try to bring back the death penalty for non coordinated ear-pieces.On a frivolous note, They stopped executing children in 1833 in England. Just a few decades after they stopped burning women at the stake!

I'm sure, Anonymous, that if it was one of your loved ones that was mercilessly and brutally kicked to death, you wouldn't be so quick to disagree with me

emma grace, truly you've a turn of phrase the Mail'd be proud of. But in such circumstances I'd hope that I wouldn't call on people to be executed in order to save a few quid.

I would like to remind everybody that we are entering the season of goodwill to all mankind. It easy to have a knee jerk reaction when terrible things happen ,but love and forgiveness are our only salvation in the long term.P.S if anybody knows who robbed Our Ladys of the Sacred Heart let me know cause i want to rip thier b******s right off!God bless you all my children.

Scoteee, I think you'll find the democratic vote is based upon the anonymity of the ballot box.

Whilst my gut reaction is to bring back the death penalty, in reality we have to remember that there are people in prison who are actually innocent of the terrible crimes they have been found guilty of.(I'm not implying that was the case here) So, imagine your innocent relative is about to be executed, how do you feel now? Remember the IRA travesties of justice from the seventies? No going back once they are dead.

Scoteee, in a civilised society, I would have thought that the appropriate course of action is to imprison them for the rest of their days.

The British Retail Consortium has just published the first positive bit of news for the High street.Apparently Argos have seen a 33% rise in Elzabeth Duke from one days worth of trading in the Northwest.Apparently Robinho was also seen leaving the Trafford centre that day with his mrs covered in golden corn dolls and holding a his hands which were laiden with sovereign rings!
