Thursday 26 November: Train punctuality improves, courts not doing enough to tackle low level crime, and pensioner butts airline stewardess

Published on November 26th 2009.

TRANSPENNINE EXPRESS HAS BEEN NAMED the most improved train service for this autumn, with punctuality rates jumping more than eight per cent to 91.3 per cent. Network Rail have revealed figures that show 90.2 per cent of all trains nationally ran on time from October 18 to November 14; the first time a 90 per cent figure has been recorded during an autumnal four-week period. The worst-performing company was west coast main line operator Virgin Trains.

THE RABBI WHO TOOK PART IN SEX-FUELLED PARTIES has been cleared of dealing drugs. Rabbi Baruch Chalomish of Salford spent £1,000 a week on cocaine, Manchester Crown Court heard. The multi-millionaire admitted possessing cocaine and was found guilty of a further count of possession but cleared of two counts of possession with intent to supply. Chalomish will be sentenced on 17 December.

COURTS ARE NOT DOING ENOUGH to reduce low-level crime, says Greater Manchester’s top cop. Chief constable Peter Fahy believes the courts are struggling to be effective at a “very, very local level”, and failing to tackle “longer-term patterns of behaviour in people who are a constant nuisance in their local community.”

A PENSIONER WAS HAULED OFF A JET FOR BUTTING A STEWARDESS during a flight to Manchester. John Gordon was quizzed by police on suspicion of assaulting a female member of the cabin crew but the accused, from Stalybridge, described the incident as a “storm in a tea cup”. Mr Gordon has been released on bail, pending further inquiries.
