Monday 28 April: Opera House to replace casino, Corrie family axed and Giggs rues Chelsea defeat

Published on April 28th 2008.

AN OPERA HOUSE is rumoured to be replacing the rejected super casino in Manchester. The Royal Opera House and the council are in talks over a £250m project which would see the world's leading singers performing at the venue. The development is on a list of proposals to regenerate East Manchester. Prime Minister Gordon Brown is said to be keen on the idea.

DOG OWNERS who don't pick up dog foul after their pets are being tracked by surveillance in Bolton. A survey has found that several UK councils are spying on people who let dogs foul in public places by using laws which are normally used to track criminals and terrorists. The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (Ripa) has been used more than 100 times in the last 12 months to conduct surveillance.

CORONATION STREET'S newest family have been axed from the show by new producer Kim Crowther. The Morton family, who joined the soap in March 2007 will be written out in autumn. A source told The Sun: “Most of the actors were called in at lunchtime and told - they are gutted.”

RYAN GIGGS has put United's defeat to title rivals Chelsea, down to luck. He told MUTV: “The luck just didn’t go for us. They cleared two shots off the line, they were given a penalty and Ronaldo got a dubious offside call when through on goal. Chelsea were the better team in the first half and we were disappointed because we didn’t keep the ball enough.”
