Monday 1 December: Rush hour crash, escapee back in Cheshire prison and 4,000 year old necklace found in Stockport

Published on December 1st 2008.

A SCHOOLBOY has died this morning after being hit by a bus in rush hour. The 12 or 13-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after the accident at the junction of the A6 Stockport Road and Richmond Grove East, in Longsight, shortly before 8am. Stockport Road was closed off and delays were expected for some time.

A PRISONER who escaped during an escorted visit to Manchester city centre has handed himself into police in Wales. Stephen Edwards, was serving a sentence for wounding with intent at HMP Risley, Cheshire. He went missing over two weeks ago on the day out to Manchester city centre. His disappearance sparked searches across the UK. The 44-year-old handed himself in at a police station in Cardiff on Friday and has since been taken back to the Cheshire prison.

A 4,000-YEAR-OLD necklace has been uncovered in Stockport. The amber necklace is believed to be from the Bronze Age and was found whilst archaeologists were evacuating a stone lined grave in Mellor, Stockport. Experts from the University of Manchester Archaeological Unit said a bronze necklace was one of the ultimate status symbols of the period.

WAYNE ROONEY has said that beating City on Sunday was a “massive result.” The striker, who scored his 100th club career goal in the match, told MUTV: “It was a massive win, not necessarily because it was against Manchester City but because three points are vital, especially with Chelsea and Liverpool playing after us. We simply had to win and I thought we produced a good performance.”

Do we have to have the obligatory football comment every day? Don't get me wrong, I'm a lover of the game, but they are often incredibly banal and, for me at least, football is not why I visit Mancon. Why not use the space to give us some news or info we can't get on the back of every newspaper in the country.
