Tuesday 14 July: City sign Tevez, model's 999 call and BNP sticker angers Salford Council

Published on July 14th 2009.

MANCHESTER CITY has agreed a deal to sign former Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez. The 25-year-old Argentine forward, who left Old Trafford last month, will sign a five-year deal subject to a medical. Manager Mark Hughes said the Tevez signing “shows the commitment of the owner to make this club the very best it can be." The Argentinean could re-visit his old club at the Old Trafford derby on 19 September, making him one of only a few players to play for both clubs.

RAIDERS ARMED WITH HAMMERS targeted the watch counter of a 150-year-old family jewellery shop, Prestons of Bolton. Police said security features at the store meant the gang were locked in and had to smash their way out. None of the 15 workers in the store or customers were injured.

SALFORD COUNCIL has begun an inquiry after a national newspaper published a photograph of a bin lorry brandishing a BNP sticker on its windscreen. Environment Councillor Joe Murphy said: “the council has clear rules against using council property to promote political parties in this way”.

A YOUNG MODEL DIALLED 999 and pleaded for help moments before she died. The 19-year-old told the operator her boyfriend had “stabbed her to death”, a court has heard. The amateur footballer accused of killing Amy Leigh Barnes, suddenly jumped to his feet in the dock and ran down a staircase to a holding area below, as Manchester Crown Court was given details of the murder. The trial continues.
