FOUR MEN have been arrested after police found a gun in a city centre pub. The fully loaded semi-automatic handgun was found in Joshua Brooks pub on Princess Street on Wednesday night. Detective Inspector Paul Miller said: “We will continue to target those who carry guns and those who are prepared to use them.”
MANCHESTER is fast becoming the nation’s junk food capital, according to reports. The city’s ratio of fast food outlets to schools is far higher than the rest of the UK. The School Food Trust found 36 takeaways for every secondary school compared with the national average of 23. The government-funded body wants every secondary school to ban pupils from leaving school grounds during lunch break.
THE BOLLARDS outside Marks and Spencer in Manchester city centre have exposed yet another obtuse driver, whose bonnet was impaled on Tuesday afternoon. Councillor Neil Swannick has spoken out against the tailgaters whose actions he has described as ‘beggars belief.’ The rising bollards have been in place since June 2006. Despite the warning signs, some drivers still believe they can cheat the system.
BRITAIN has won a hat-trick of medals on the first two days of the World Track Cycling Championships in Manchester. Bradley Wiggins, Edward Clancy, Geraint Thomas and Paul Manning defeated Denmark to defend their title in a world record time. Victoria Pendleton and Shanaze Reade won world titles in the women's team sprint. Rebecca Romero defended champion Sarah Hammer of the United States in the 3000 metres event.
