Monday 20 April: Is Sir Alex a hypocrite? Plus a cow on fire in city centre, and wrinkly gangsters

Published on April 20th 2009.

POSTERS OF THE RECENTLY JAILED GOOCH GANG members as they may appear when they complete their life sentences go on Mancunian display today. The posters show murderers Colin Joyce and Lee Amos in, respectively, 2048 and 2044, at 69 and 68 years old. In the fourteen months since they have been imprisoned there have been no gang-related murders in Manchester and shootings have fallen by 92 per cent.

A COW WAS on found on fire this Sunday on Rochdale Road. Maverick chef Robert Owen-Brown was cooking a whole cow on a spit close to the city centre as part of The Angel pub’s St George’s Day celebrations. Aside from this surprising vision, there was also a Punch and Judy show, live music and a black pudding throwing competition.

IS SIR ALEX FERGUSON a hypocrite after fielding a ‘reserve’ team for yesterday’s FA Cup semi-final. After criticising Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez for claiming that Everton were a ‘small team’, did Ferguson show equal disrespect by beginning with a team that contained only two definite first team starters: Vidic and Ferdinand? The Merseysiders won the match 4-2 on penalties.

MEANWHILE THE UNITED manager has been praised for sticking to the old style blazer for the above match. This doesn’t have the badge of Manchester United but the crest of the City of Manchester and goes back to the days when clubs in challenge cups would be representing their city: so City and United would wear the crest rather than any club insignia.

This 'n' that wisdom*: After you’ve heard two eyewitness accounts of a car accident, you begin to wonder about history

*Taken from the free calendar available at This 'n' That, Soap Street, Northern Quarter. Those curry meisters are so very very sagacious. How does this wisdom rate? Confidential rating: 8/10

Apart from the Australian guidance above, I can't find anything for UK court reporting. However, the discrepancy between the MEN reports seems odd.

OK £40-£50 per ticket + travel expenses + food and drink etc. It's still an expensive, long day to watch the kids get a run out. Talking of Cardiff Castlefield I'm curious to know if you know I'm a Scouser & Liverpool fan?

Dig, I've only heard of Spearing actually. The Utd team on Sunday was full of youngsters who are literally knocking on the 1st team door, Macheda and Gibson aside, all the others have seen genuine first team action and didn't come as a surprise - that said, I was surprised by the lightweight nature of the bench. Ronaldo or Rooney would've made "that" difference, and Rooney especially would get the troops motivated - like Scholes was obviously intended.

I went to the Carling Cup final and it's a great day out anyway to be honest. Having been to many FA Cup finals etc at old Wembley, Cardiff and New Wembley, the new one is much better. I don't agree it should have been there though. As for the team, you know they got to penalties and if you miss two you're done for and they were missed by top players. Where was carlos the lion when they were being taken? He's irritating me, he wants 100k a week and yet has less impact (despite running around like a loon) than some of the kids, and won't take a penalty. Dig, I can tell you very fans will have paid £100 plus for tickets as they were around £40-£50 mate. I know as I got two for a mate. The best 'Wembley' trip I ever had was against Liverpool at Cardiff and we lost but a great day abusing scousers was had by all.

Re united wearing the 'old style blazer' for the match - don't you not think that as he's saving the first team for another match, he's probably also saving the uniform? He can get away with not washing it this way you see.

DigApril 20th 2009.

Just as I expected Castlefiend, yawn.

DigApril 20th 2009.

I'm not biased. If I'd paid for a ticket and travelled to London to watch Plessis, Spearing, Brouwer, Pacheco, Cavalieri etc I wouldn't be happy at all. Jamie Carragher is the perfect example. Plays every game, never gets rested and never looks tired. All together now, 'We all dream of a team of Carraghers!'.

Dig. Who? Are they not nasty diseases?

Dig, I couldn't give a **** mate. I could be a supersonic spaceman for all you know! However perhaps you could give me some help with my sat nav as I'm going to Liverpool for my passport renewal and it keeps telling me Liverpool's in Europe. That aint right is it?

These players are totally pampered. They have access to the best nutritionists, fitness coaches etc. They are supremely fit athletes. If they can't play 60-70 games a year something is seriously wrong. It's barely more than a game a week.

East Lancs & Dig, I see both your sides here guys but i went on sunday and felt a little let down that the big guns werent even on the bench. I dont mind letting Marcheda et al prove their worth but at 0-0 with half an hr to go surely Rooney and Ronaldo would have thrived off driving the team to the final and that would have given them a boost for portsmouth and spurs this week.Totally agree that Berbatov is a waste of time, £30m and he looks like he's already riding out his £80k pw contract but Rio is a legend and fair play to him for stepping up when others bottled it.

DigApril 20th 2009.

He showed disrespect to Everton, to the competition and most of all, to the travelling, paying fans. I wonder how many fans would have payed £100+ for a ticket and travelled 275 miles if they had prior knowledge of the team he was to field...

east lancsApril 20th 2009.

Ah, now I get the bias!

east lancsApril 20th 2009.

Dig, I think you're missing the point: Fergie always rewards the youngsters in the cup competitions, fact. Further fact; even we (Utd) were starting to show signs of fatigue in the squad recently - the Prem and CL are priorities, so I've no probs whatsoever with Fergie making sure our "big hitters" are fit for our game-in-hand against Portsmouth tomorrow. I would have liked a Quadruple though, shut the scousers' squeals of "5 times" up for another season :o)

One for the hacks: Any MEN journalists want to explain why the Gooch gang defendants during the course of the trial were referred to as Mr, while defendants in other trials reported in the same month were without honorifics?Gooch gang trial www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/…/1105256_jury_out_in_gang_trialOther… trials reported in the same www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/…/1101516_teen_killed_after_street_rowPress… Council www.presscouncil.org.au/…/equality.htmlInteresting… discrepancy for those interested in such matters.
