WYTHENSHAWE POLICE STATION WAS EVACUATED after a granny walked in with a hand grenade. Margaret Haslam, 66, walked in to the station midday yesterday to hand in the grenade and two rounds of ammunition. Police told nearby neighbours to stay indoors and said, "We would like to advise members of the public that when they find hand grenades and ammunition to call the police immediately rather than pick the items up."
THE RELICS OF A ROMAN CATHOLIC NUN are due to visit Salford next week. Regarded as the 'greatest saint in modern times', a casket containing part of the remains of St Therese of Lisieux will arrive in Kent before visiting Salford Cathedral from Friday 26 – Sunday 28 September. Dying from tuberculosis aged 24 in 1897, the French Carmelite nun became famous after her death following the publication of her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, which has been translated into 50 languages and read by millions.
POLICE ARE PROBING AN ARSENAL PLAYER’S celebration following a complaint from a fan. It is alleged the striker celebrated in front of home fans at Eastlands and mouthed an offensive word towards the City supporters in the stands. Police will speak to the fan before deciding whether to investigate the allegation.
VOLUNTARY STREET MONITORS have been set up in Oldham to help improve their neighbourhood. Armed with a clipboard, the volunteers will report to the council on everything from graffiti and litter, and is the biggest scheme of its kind in the country.
