Published on July 23rd 2008.

GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE may have to remove thousands of old criminal records of minor offences from the national database. A ruling has been made by the Information Tribunal on holding personal details. It said personal information should not be kept for longer than necessary. Five forces including Greater Manchester, have appealed. Police are concerned that the ruling could have far-reaching implications.

THE NEW Greater Manchester's chief constable will be named today. The late Michael Todd's successor will be revealed this afternoon after an announcement at the Lowry Hotel. An inquest into the death of Mr Todd is to be held later this year. The current front-runner for the post is Cheshire's Chief Constable, Peter Fahy.

A MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY mature student has received a history degree after studying historical events he lived through. The 81-year-old 2:1 graduate used to work in the coal mines in Wigan during World War II. Robert Benjamin was touched by the friendliness of his younger classmates. He told the BBC: “I was touched that after the graduation some of them asked me out for a drink. After all I was a living example of what they had been studying.”

DODGY ICE-CREAM VANS are being targeted by Salford Council, who have set up a 'cones hotline' to keep them off the streets. Environmental health officers are urging the public to check if ice-cream vans are displaying the relevant licence. Members of the public should report suspicious operators on 0161 909 6500.
