<b>Monday 18 August:</b> the London cycling scam, big memorial wanted and there's only one point to football

WITH GB CYCLING winning so many medals at the Beijing Olympics, questions are being asked about the reasons behind a £22m velodrome for the London 2012 Olympics. This story was first broken by Confidential columnist Graham Stringer MP in April this year – click here. He wrote: 'Unbelievably the Organising Committee of the Games will not save money in building a velodrome and allow the cycling to take place in Manchester’s world class, record-breaking facility but insist on building their own centre.'

A TEENAGER has been arrested following the fatal stabbing of Conor Black, 16, in Harpurhey. Conor Black had attended a party on Saturday night which turned confrontational. The trainee joiner, who was studying at further education college MANCAT, was stabbed in the back as he returned home in the small hours.

SATURDAY saw the comemmoration of the Peterloo Massacre on 16 August 1819. Fifteen people were killed and more than 600 injured by the military during a protest in Manchester about parliamentary reform. A group dedicated to marking the event in the city through an artwork laid a wreath at the site. Proposals for the memorial can be found at www.peterloomassacre.org

MANCHESTER's football teams had troublesome starts to the new football season. Manchester City went down 4-2 away at Aston Villa while Manchester United could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United. One of City's big hopes for this season the Bulgarian player Valeri Bojinov ruptured an Achilles during the match warm-up.

It was on Moston Lane, not really Harpurhey. And I would never walk on Moston Lane that late at night (2:00 am). A taxi driver told us there had been trouble on Moston Lane all week - something to do with racial tensions between owners of some of the African takeaways & supermarkets and gangs of lads. We wondered if it was related...
