Wednesday 13 August: It's grim up North for Tories, council workers peep show and City dispel rumours

Published on August 13th 2008.

NORTHERNERS should move down south according to a new Tory think-tank. The report suggests that cities such as Liverpool, Sunderland and Bradford are 'beyond revival' and residents should migrate south instead of staying 'trapped' in such areas. The Conservative party has today said that they support the regeneration of northern cities and the report does not reflect party policy.

TWO COUNCIL WORKERS have been suspended for having sex in an office. The couple were spotted through the window of the building on Cheapside in Oldham, Greater Manchester, last Friday. Up to 20 people reportedly watched the couple for around 20 minutes before a Police Community Support Officer went inside and told them.

PLANS to rejuvenate Stockport have been delayed after a major developer pulled out. The £500m Bridgefield development would have provided shops, a cinema, apartments and leisure space for the town. Land Lease developers withdrew from the project last week following years of negotiation and investment. Construction was due to start in 2010.

UNCERTAINTY around City owner Thaksin Shinawatra will not cause any threat to the club's stability according to chairman Garry Cook who insists that City's future is not in jeopardy. City boss Mark Hughes also added: “There have been a lot of rumours flying around but I am not going anywhere and I don’t anticipate going anywhere. I am the guy that makes the decisions in relation to the football. All the rumours unsettle the players. That is why I want to end them right now.”

Its all relative isn't it. We might not be as "wealthy" up north but we're not having to pay £300K to live in a converted double garage in Enfield. If cities outside london got even 25% of the local public investment that london gets (thinking jubilee line extension, cross rail, civil service etc.), proportionate to population, they'd be better able to draw in businesses. We got more for manchester out of the last tory govmt!
