THE ABSURDITY CLUB of Manchester met in the Kings Arms, Salford, last night at 5.30pm. It’s a Confidential initiative to bring more humour back to the city media. The Absurdity Club will meet every last Monday of the month and nothing of importance will ever be talked about. Nor will anything of significance be discussed. But some stupid articles might result from it. And some hangovers.

DERWENT HOLDINGS are appealing the recent High Court decision backing plans to redevelop Lancashire County Cricket Club’s Old Trafford stadium. The club has now been forced to postpone its Annual General Meeting, which was due to take place on April 13, as it prepares for another legal wrangle, which may threaten the financial future of the club.

SHANNA BUKHARI 24, lives in Manchester and is aiming to become the first Muslim to represent the UK in Miss World contest. However some Muslim groups have accused her of disrespecting Islam. Bukhari instead believes Muslims in the UK should be allowed to have a western lifestyle. Go girl, we say.

PEEL GROUP has announced plans for the Port Salford scheme. A tender has been put out for ‘consultative engineering and construction services’ covering ‘provision of a range of professional services in connection with the design of a port and associated infrastructure works adjacent to an existing ship canal.’ The firm is looking for the following services: Rail Engineer; Civil & Structural Engineer; Mechanical and Electrical Infrastructure Services Consultant; Landscape Architect; Sustainability/Environmental Consultant; Ecologist, and Quantity Surveyor.

Fact of the day: This week in 1856. The first game of chess by telegraph in England was played between the Chess Clubs of Liverpool and Manchester.
