City News in 250 words: Wednesday 25 May

A GROUP OF MASKED MEN attacked paparazzi cars at the home of Ryan Giggs in Worsley. The vehicles, belonging to journalists and photographers camped outside the Manchester United footballers home, were vandalised after a gang pulled up in a transit van. Reporters said tires were slashed and cars were kicked and covered in flour and eggs.

A TOP SURGEON from Greater Manchester has been caught copying the work of another doctor to win promotion. Gordon Shepard, a consultant in trauma and orthopaedic surgery at Royal Bolton Hospital, was caught cheating when he left the other medic's name on work for a distance learning course in medical education. He admitted seven counts of plagiarism at a hearing at the General Medical Council in Manchester.

POLICE TALKED A MAN DOWN from a motorway bridge in Didsbury last night. A team of specially trained negotiators coaxed a mentally ill man to safety over two hours after he was spotted above the Princess Park junction of the M60 at 4.30am. He has now been sectioned.

A TRAFFORD COUNCIL BOSS earning £170k-a-year has been off work for three months. Janet Callender, chief executive of the flagship Conservative council has not been at her desk since February due to ill health. The council is currently striving to save up to £70m over the next four years in the light of government cuts. Joanne Hyde, the council’s director of human resources, said: “We are in regular contact with her and she is expected to return to work.”

This week in 2001: Kevin Keegan became manager of newly-relegated Manchester City FC, returning the club to the Premiership after one season.

I read the story about Janet Callender elsewhere and whilst im not exactly the founder member of The Trafford Council Fan Club or have anything but the upmost contempt for the Tory scum who inhabit it - it have to stop and wonder about Callender's ill health and what form it takes. Neither you or the other story i read made mention of the specifics of this womans illness so we dont know how ill she - she could, for all we know, be very ill and as such has every right to be off work. I dont really see what the story is - just because she is paid a lot of money doesnt mean she isnt allowed to get ill and take time off work and it just seems mean to suggest anything else.

I too am no fan of the tories of Trafford, but I think it's a bit remiss of Confidential to publish a trite intimation that this woman should be a cost cutting measure. This person may be seriously ill and undergoing treatment, of which Trafford MBC is fully aware and supportive, knowing she will return to a job that she is (hopefully) good at - and which is *ahem* confidential medical information.

As the spokesbod says they are in regular contact and foresee a return.

I'll stop short of a "shame on you", but I wouldn't have been proud to have written that piece.
