A WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the deaths of three patients at Stepping Hill Hospital. Police believe the victims had their saline drips deliberately contaminated with insulin. The 26-year-old is thought to be a member of staff at the hospital. A fourth patient remains critically ill.

THE HUNT for two escaped prisoners, Kirk Bradley and Tony Downes, has reached an international level. The pair escaped from a prison van on its way from Strangeways Prison to Liverpool Crown Court after it was ambushed by what is now believed to have been locally hired gangsters. The prison van had no police escort for the journey, which left one security guard injured.

BROADCASTER Stuart Hall has labeled Jeremy Clarkson ‘deluded’ after his outburst about the BBC’s move north. The outspoken Top Gear presenter said in his Sunday Times column, Salford was "a small suburb with a Starbucks and a canal with ducks." Mr Hall, 81, replied, "Manchester is booming, the financial sector deals with the world. Our scientists lead. Manchester is a seat of knowledge, a breeding ground for brains."

A STAR TREK fanatic from Salford has landed a dream job after being spotted wearing his maroon Star Fleet Command uniform at a film and comic convention in London. Hotel manager Raules Davies, of Eccles New Road, will host a series of trailers revealing little known facts about the show. The shorts will air on satellite channel CBS Action before episodes of the sci-fi classic, starting from tonight.

This week in 1830 Architect Alfred Waterhouse was born. He designed Manchester Town Hall, Strangeways Prison, London's Natural History Museum etc
