City News in 250 words: Thursday 12 May

PLANS for Heaton Park to host concerts and musical festivals are under threat after more than 40 residents objected to Manchester City Council. The plans would allow the park to host concerts until 11pm, seven days a week. They could also host up to three weekend music festivals and would be licensed to sell alcohol. A decision is due on May 26.

A HOSPITAL is investigating after a new mum died a week after being discharged. Hayley Constable was sent home with baby Alfie following a routine Caesarian but was rushed back into Fairfield Hospital a week later. The 27 year old became worried when the area around her scar turned red. The scar was cleaned surgically but she later developed breathing difficulties. She passed away on April 22.

MANCHESTER City Centre is expecting more than a quarter of a million football fans this Saturday as both United and City compete for trophies. Clubs and bars are geared up for the rush but have warned trouble makers to stay away. Extra security staff have been hired and CCTV systems are being checked to help ensure everyone has a good time.

A COLLYHURST family are recovering after knife-wielding robbers broke into their home and stole their parrot. A 49 year old woman and her 17 year son were woken at 4:15am by three men in their twenties. They pushed the woman and threatened her son with a knife before making off with Ruby the African grey and a quantity of cash.

Fact of the Day: This week in 1584 Manchester’s Court Leet ordered that single women should not be allowed to rent a house or exercise a trade.
