TEACHERS WANT TO CUT BENEFITS FOR NAUGHTY PUPILS: The Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) debated cutting child benefits for parents of poorly behaved pupils and compulsory attendance of parenting classes in a conference yesterday. Instances of verbal, physical and sexual assaults were widespread and the ATL's general secretary said over a third of their staff have experienced aggression from parents or guardians.

CRIMEWATCH APPEAL FOR MANCHESTER PC KILLERS: A year after being fatally struck by a car in Heaton Mersey, the BBC has launched a crimewatch appeal for PC Mike Silcock's killers. There is currently a £10,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of his killers. His family believes that the names of his killers are “common knowledge” in parts of Manchester.

DRUNK LEARNER DRIVER CRASHES IN FIRST LESSON: George Howarth, fifty three, turned up to his lesson over the limit, lost control of the vehicle embedded it into railings in August 2008. Manchester magistrates banned him from driving for sixteen months after Howarth admitted drink driving. He was fined further for failing to attend court after being charged. Jobless Howarth has since passed his test.

ASBO FOR MARLEY-SINGING RASTAFARIAN: Michael Logan, thirty three, has been banned from singing hits such as I Shot the Sheriff to passers-by on the doorsteps of his Salford home after dozens of complaints. Logan, who describes himself as “half monk, half warrior” does not agree with his ASBO but stated that he will now go to the river to sing.
