City News in 250 Words: Tuesday August 16

DETECTIVE chief superintendent Darren Shenton of Greater Manchester Police has spoken out against the appointment of American ‘supercop’ Bill Bratton as a crime advisor to the government. Shenton, who has visited the US forces on behalf of GMP, said: “I don’t think we are arrogant to think that what we do here in Manchester is the best...They would probably learn more from us than we could from them.”

GMP is also holding a woman in custody on suspicion of the murder of a man in his 50s, who was found dead at a house on Jubilee Road in Middleton. Police were called to the house following reports of a stabbing. The man had suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect is currently being questioned.

JIM DOBBIN, Labour MP for Heywood, has called on the government to address the problem of tranquiliser addiction in the North West. More people are prescribed the benzodiazepines tranquiliser, a drug designed to help treat insomnia and anxiety, in the region than anywhere else in England. The potentially addictive drug, nicknamed ‘benzos’, allegedly has more than 5,000 people hooked in the Oldham area alone.

EMERGENCY services were called to the Scout Moor Quarry wind farm site in Edenfield yesterday after a 130 tonne crane lost its brakes, careered into an earth bank and capsized, killing the driver. The driver has not yet been named. Lancashire Police has started a joint investigation into the incident with the health and safety executive.
