City News in 250 Words: Thursday July 28

A MEMORY stick thought to contain the details of police informers has been stolen from the home of a Greater Manchester Police detective. The detective left the back door to his Oldham home open and the thief took the memory stick, which is not thought to be password protected, from his wallet, along with his car keys. The officer has been suspended and an investigation is ongoing.

A 72 YEAR-OLD shopkeeper has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 30 year-old man was stabbed to death in Old Trafford. The victim, Gary Mullings, was part of a gang that stormed a florists and suffered fatal wounds in a struggle. Mullings had previously been acquitted of murder in 2002 when a man was shot.

A 19 YEAR-OLD superhero has been keeping the streets of Salford safe at night for the last 10 months. Roger Hayhurst, a gardener by day, dons his black and blue costume at night and wanders the streets breaking up fights and combating anti-social behaviour. He says the sight of him is usually enough to stop most fights, but if he encounters resistance he simply phones the police.

SERGIO Aguero is already a Manchester City player, according to his Twitter feed. The striker, 23, has arrived in Manchester to complete a medical after City agreed a fee, believed to be in the region of £38m, with Atletico Madrid. The move is going ahead despite the collapse of want-away forward Carlos Tevez’s proposed move to Brazilian club Corinthians.

This week in 1882: Daniel Adamson called a meeting to discuss building a waterway between Manchester and Liverpool (the Manchester Ship Canal).
