City News in 250 Words: Thursday 8 July

DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CITY: The Co-operative office and Manchester City Council will be moving ahead with plans to create two new squares in the city centre. A competition to find a design team for the streets and public squares, which will be located at the Co-op's 20-acre headquarters near Victoria station, is currently under way.

THE GREATER MANCHESTER SURGICAL CENTRE, which became inactive last month after a £70 million funding contract with Netcare fell through, could be revived as an NHS super centre. The facility would provide care for people with bone and joint problems. The Trafford Healthcare Trust is discussing plans with the Central Manchester and University Hospitals South Manchester Foundation Trust.

TERROR SUSPECT ARRESTED: Metropolitan Police counter terrorism officers have arrested Abid Naseer on suspicion of planning to bomb the New York underground system. He was originally arrested last year during a police operation in Cheetham Hill in connection with a terror plot in Greater Manchester. US authorities requested his extradition to face trial over allegations of his involvement in what they believe is one of the most dangerous plots since the 9/11 attacks.

DANCING FRAUDSTER CAUGHT: Terrence Read who scammed £20,000 in disability benefits by claiming he had arthritis has been found out after he was caught dancing on video at an exhibition in the Printworks. He is in fact a dance enthusiast and an expert in jazz styles like the Charleston and Lindy Hop. The 61-year-old was receiving the highest award of mobility and care costs.

Out of the windown weather forecast: A nice cool breeze and sunlight peering through the clouds. Perfect for a picnic.
