City News in 250 Words: Monday 15 March

THOUSANDS GATHER FOR ST PATRICK'S PARADE: Guinness hats, green scarves and shamrock emblems were all in attendance as crowds line the path from Cheetham all the way into the city. Brass bands and flag bearers on colourful floats led the procession on Saturday as part of Manchester Irish Festival, whose size, according to the organisers, are bested only by New York and Dublin. The festival will run until 21 March. Click here for details of events to come.

CHEETHAM HILL FACTORY FIRE: A fire started in Green Land Bedding, in Howard Street on Sunday evening. Firefighters were still on site this morning damping down. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT SEES HISTORIC DECLINE IN PASSENGERS: figures released from the Civil Aviation Authority today shows the fall in numbers in 2009 being the biggest since the second World War, with the drop of 2.4 million passengers taking us back to the level they were six years previous. Much of this is attributed to the recession, with the CAA expressing uncertainty about the pace of recovery.

TAXPAYERS TO FOOT BILL FOR NEW SALFORD CITY REDS STADIUM: The council-owned land in Barton is subject to a restrictive covenant for which they will have to borrow £20 million to cover the compensation payment to the unidentified covenant holder. Councillor David Lancaster says Salford Council is “working to resolve outstanding issues” but did not provide details of the negotiations. The stadium will replace the Reds' 109-year-old Willows ground in Weaste.
