City News In 250 Words: Tuesday 12 July

RYANAIR has announced it will be operating twenty six new routes to popular destinations from Manchester Airport by the end of next year including Ibiza. It hopes the knock on effect will create up to 2000 jobs. Four planes will be based at Manchester Airport.

THE SON of Big Fat Gypsy Weddings star Paddy Doherty has appeared in court charged with attempted murder. David Doherty, 27, from Salford, Greater Manchester, is accused of driving over a man's legs before firing a sawn-off shotgun at him. Paddy Doherty, 52, appeared in the Channel 4 documentary series which was broadcast earlier this year.

POPULAR restaurateur Steve Pilling is set to return to the city centre with an 150 cover restaurant on Deansgate in the Courthouse development. The restaurant for the former Mr Thomas’s Chop House man will be called Mr Pilling’s Roast Restaurant and Oyster Bar. It will feature a large iced seafood counter.

COUNCILLOR Nigel Murphy has stated in an exclusive interview with Confidential that cuts play a part in the rise in city centre parking charges and the extension of controlled hours. He said: ‘Spending cuts certainly come into it but congestion is the main thing. There have been a lot of hard choices to be made and we can’t always do things the way we have done. If we want to have the money to reinvest in highways, it can come from parking reserves. If our budget is being taken, we have to find the money from somewhere else.’

Fact of the Day: This week 1868 Hannah Beswick, the Manchester Mummy, was buried at Harpurhey Cemetery. Her body had been embalmed after her death in 1758.

I don't understand why Manchester just doesn't introduce a travel card system like the oyster card. Traveling on different buses, trains or trams is an expensive cost to the manchester commuter and for some it is cheaper to drive in and park their car. If more was done to scale down the costs surely this would help with congestion as more people would commute? I pay up to £100.00 per month for traveling on buses and trains to get to and from work. something needs to be done and quickily.

Because TfGM isn't TfL and can't do it as easily.
