A BURGLAR, stabbed to death on Wednesday night, was on bail for a previous break in. John Bennell was part of a gang of four men who attempted to rob a house on Ethel Avenue. The owner of the property, Peter Flanagan, remains in custody charged with murder. Mr Flanagan’s son Neil Flanagan and his girlfriend were released without charge.
PART OF THE REASON the In the City music conference will not go ahead this year is that the organiser is getting married. Yvette Livesey ran the festival with her partner Tony Wilson until his death in 2007, but continued organising it in subsequent years. However, she has announced she’s recovering from a serious illness and is getting wed, so will take a year off.
FC UNITED’s plans to build a stadium in Moston have a mixed reaction. Residents living near the planned 5,000 seater stadium near St Mary’s Road said it would provide extra sport facilities and take youngsters off the streets. Others objected as they feared their house prices would fall as a consequence of the building. The proposal has yet to receive planning permission. Confidential thinks it should go ahead and wonders why on earth residents think house prices will fall – surely they’ll rise as the amenity of the area is raised?
MANCHESTER is to host its first marathon in ten years next April, in partnership with Altrincham-based sports management company Xtra Mile and Trafford Council. The run will go past Old Trafford and Dunham Massey Park.
Fact of the Day: This week in 1912 computer pioneer Alan Turing was born. His statue was unveiled in Sackville Park, Manchester, on this day in 2001.
