Airport eye scanners and train station barriers: Monday 14 January

City news in 250 words

Published on January 14th 2008.

TWO MEN have been stabbed with a broken bottle on Market Street. The two friends were out in the city on Sunday night when one of them was smashed over the head with the bottle and stabbed in the chest before the other victim was stabbed in the body. Both men were taken to North Manchester General Hospital.

EYE SCANNERS have been introduced to Manchester Airport in a bid to improve security. The iris-recognition system is the first of its kind in the UK and is being used on staff in all three terminals. Staff will now enter a pod where a camera will scan their iris before they can pass through to restricted zones. Their eye information is held on a secure control system which is not shared with any other organisation.

TICKET BARRIERS are to be installed at Oxford Road train station for the first time in more than two decades. Six new London tube-style gates, designed to ease congestion and reduce fare dodgers, will come into operation in early March. The number of people traveling without a ticket is estimated to cost the rail industry £210m every year.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON has praised Cristiano Ronaldo for his goalscoring. The Portuguese winger scored his first hat-trick for the Reds in the 6-0 victory over Newcastle at the weekend. Sir Alex told manutd.com: “His first hat-trick was always coming. He’s been close on a number of occasions but today he capped a really fine display. We’re delighted for him.”

Eye scanners? My god it's started already. What happens if someone fails the scan, sent home for the day, arrested, executed on the spot?
