A bank robbery, dirty hotels and a stupid mother: Wednesday 16 January

City news in 250 words

Published on January 16th 2008.

NATIONWIDE BANK in Piccadilly was the target of a robbery yesterday evening. Four men tried to rob security staff delivering cash to the bank just before 6pm. They also attempted to smash the glass door of Nationwide but on failing to do so, used a sledgehammer to break the window of the security van parked outside instead, before running off. No money was stolen and nobody was injured.

THE DIRTIEST hotels in the UK have been revealed and Manchester has been named and shamed for a second year running. The Britannia Stockport has been listed as number three this year as oppose to number one and the Britannia Country House Hotel in Didsbury is tenth on the list as oppose to eight last year. The results were compiled through an internet poll by TripAdvisor.

A MOTHER who left her baby locked in a car whilst she drank a bottle of wine in a pub has walked free from court. Gemma Train, 23, left her one-year-old son in the vehicle for two hours whilst she socialised in The Rose Hill Tavern, Westhoughton. Train commented that she couldn’t believe her own actions as she’s usually quite choosy about whom she leaves him with. She is now under a 12 month supervision order.

MANCHESTER CITY has a chance to restore Sven-Goran Eriksson’s faith in the side in tonight’s FA Cup replay clash with West Ham. Following a disappointing defeat against Everton, Eriksson said: “I was frustrated and disappointed with the first 40 minutes.”

Nationwide Bank Piccadilly. Do you mean Nationwide Building Society? There was a scam a few months ago, pretending to be from Nationwide Bank.

Your story about upstanding mother Gemma Train did miss out on one important fact that might change your mind about the quality of her parenting skills. She did leave the radio on to keep the child entertained. Surely grounds for an appeal.

Re: the mother who left her child: clearly completely neglectful, is anyone drawing and parallels with the MCann parents who were never charged with neglect..?
